Thank you very much indeed.

It works as desired after setting the locale to UTF-8.



An adequate behaviour of Sylpheed would be, of course, to 
tell the user when some of the symbols can not be encoded 
according the locale setting, as the result in this case 
is not useful.

Please change the status of this bug as you see fit.
