in my case  it is:

[ws] Error in display.
[ws] Error code: 14 ( BadIDChoice (invalid resource ID chosen for this
connection) )
[ws]  Request code: 147
[ws]  Minor code: 5
[ws]  Modules: vo_check_events

in my case I can move the gmplayer window around;
what happens is that somehow gmplayer
backgrounds itself, and leaves the terminal with 'echo off' ; so
I have to reset the terminal and kill the stray process.

idem

but here comes the weirdest part!
I was happy to have found this video ; so I moved it to another
directory ; then somehow I thought of trying it again ... and it works!
then I moved that video to the old dir, and it crashes!
so , it is directory dependant! :-)

then I moved away the directory ~/.mplayer ; now gmplayer does not crash

a.
