usplash_write can't handle user input. The upstream version of usplash has patches applied (which I wrote) that adds user input support, the corresponding bug for Debians version of usplash is #383249. Once it is fixed, usplash input would be easy to add (I already have it running on my laptop using a custom built usplash).
