I finally isolated the problem. It turns out it's not related to the
nvidia driver afterall as it occurs with the FOSS nv driver to.

The random freezes only occur if cpufreq_userspace and powernow-k8 are loaded.

I've been using those two modules along with powernowd for one year
and 3 months without any problem at all.

Starting with linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64_2.6.18-3, a new error message
started to appear at boot:
ACPI: Invalid package argument
ACPI Exception (acpi_processor-0272): AE_BAD_PARAMETER, Invalid _PSS
data [20060707]

Is my motherboard somehow dying slowly or did something changed in the
kernel (or elsewhere) that could have lead to this?

Any other thoughts or hints?

thanks,

-Pascal
