Just an update: I get the error message "Error 15: File not found" with upstream Grub too when savedefault is used in menu.lst. I've put a wrapper around update-grub that removes the savedefault lines from menu.lst.
Also, I figured out that "setup (hd0)" fails on this machine when run from the boot menu. "Boot Block Virus Protection" is disabled but there might be a bug in the BIOS.
