I also have this problem. Editting the init script and putting a "sleep 1" between mpd_stop and mpd_start fixes it. The problem is that mpd --kill sends a signal to another mpd process, but exits immediately itself. The other mpd process then still has to write current state to disk, close down connections, etcetera.
