debconf-show adduser
is a start.  I expect it to just answer 
* adduser/homedir-permission: true
but I'd like to be sure.

If it doesn't then there is a wierd bug that I can't spot in the
postinst.  If it does, then can you rerun the installer, but set -x the
adduser scripts and send the resulting output?
