Hi! I went through the procedure of making a spamd user and helper directory manually a few days ago, and I have looked through the patch, and it seems fine to me. It certainly avoids a couple of pitfalls I went into. :-) I don't know too much about how to write the Debian scripts, so I can't vouch for that, but I think it does what needs to be done.
Just one thing I'm uncertain about, it seems to be default log facility mail, is that a good thing?
