If you can implement another solution that will make sarge users install hal and pmount on upgrade from sarge, we might consider doing something special for !linux.
Would you accept to depend instead of "hal, pmount" on "hal | libc0.1 | libc0.3, pmount | libc0.1 | libc0.3" libc0.1 is satisfied on kfreebsd-i386 and kfreebsd-amd64, libc0.3 on hurd-i386.
