I agree it is _very_ annoying (and thanks for pointing me to the Redhat ressources that helped me figure out what I thought was a local problem with my own setup!) but gconf settings _are_ changeable (as Lo�c also seems to write in his response), it just does not rely on either Xfree86 or libc settings, and is not controllable through debconf.
