Well, I'll try again.

I run Icedove. Profile manager opens instead of Icedove. It demands me
to select (or create or delete) a profile. There is only one profile
available in the list -the "default", that is also pre-selected. I check
"don't ask again" and click "start Icedove".

Icedove starts.

If I exit Icedove and want to start it again, this all repeats all over
again.

Sorry for my ignorance ... I guess I still don't understand:

So what exactly does work if you use "default" compared to any other
profile.

Is it, that if you select "default" once, the profile manager won't
pop up again, but if you select any other profile, it will?

Maybe rephrase what works/works not in what circumstances.

Thanks,
