All "clients", i.e. php/perl/ruby scripts (except /usr/bin/mysql from the mysql-client-4.1 packge itself) are linked against libmysqlclient12 from 4.0 regardless which version of the mysql server is installed on a Sarge system. This includes self compiled stuff which uses the "default" libmysqlclient-dev package that pointed to libmysqlclient.so.12. If you have a better text that makes it the point clearer without getting too long or complicated, we can discuss it.
