Yes. Actually I've been running for some time now with $HOME/.xxdiff* removed.

d) do you also get this when you do not use any parameters on the command
   line except for: "xxdiff file1 file2".

Yes.

e) do you still get this _if_ you _do_ specify fonts as below?

Yes.

Other things I've tried:
- unlink ~/.qt
- running xxdiff as a totally different user, in case something in $HOME was
  affecting things
- updated most library debs which seemed to apply (e.g., libqt3c102-mt)
