The problem where you can't escape from aemenu without choosing a menu item occurs with aemenu-xaw and not with aemenu-gtk. Any workaround? If I could find a convenient way to invoke 'killall aemenu' that would work. Or maybe we're missing something about exiting aemenu-xaw?
