I'm experiencing the same problem, and it seems to be the problem reported at https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/edgy/+source/vino/+bug/65795 Also, bug #401346 is probably a duplicate of this bug.
The fix proposed at the above url is accepted into ubuntu and is also applied upstream: http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/vino/server/vino-prefs.c?r1=1.2&r2=1.3 Please apply the patch, this problem makes vino nearly unusable.
