I will also see if I can apply and test the timer.c.patch from https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1645 Looks as if it may be an alsa problem after all :-) I guess this might explain why chronyd becomes so busy: if it is waiting for time to pass...
