You are right. I was thinking only in terms of texdoctk, which has no provision to deal with complicated path definitions, regardless whether or not the directories exists. However, kpathsearch is inteligent enough to not include nonexisting directories in the output of things like 'kpsewhich --expand-path=\$TEXMFDIST'. Good! cheerio ralf
