You tried a Sarge installation, which is somewhat outdated. The next release of Debian (called Etch) is already beeing prepared and there are much improvements in this version. It would be very welcome, if you could give it a try: load the sparc-binary-1 from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/etch_di_rc1/sparc/iso-cd/ (this is a test version (release candidat 1) for etch) or an iso from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/sparc/iso-cd/ (a daily build of the installer; you need internet connection while doing the installation with this cd).
