Without any log it's quite hard to tell what happens. Do you have a .xinitrc ? How do you chose that xfce, fluxbox or kde should start, when using startx ? Can you attach any log (output from startx, .xsession-errors etc.) to your bug report, so one can tell what's happening ? If you try by using startxfce4, does it work ?
