Just for the record, I want to add that I (as the reporter of this specific bug) can confirm that the specific problem reported in this Debian bug #401660 really goes away when I compile digikam 0.9.0-rc2 and exiv2 0.12 from sources.
Whatever that helps for the decision about etch ;-)
