I did exactly as you suggested. Both BROWSER=/usr/bin/x-www-browser or alternatively BROWSER=/usr/bin/firefox work for me: galeon (the currently linked x-www-browser) starts in the first case, firefox opens in the second with the page. So as soon as the bug gets permanently fixed in the package, please post here. Icedove is not in backports (at least not now).
