OK, thank you for the detailed information.  I am on vacation right
now, and this looks like a problem that may not be easy to track
down.  I haven't seen it before, ever, so even reproducing it may be
difficult.

One further request:

Can you delete your ~/.hpodder/curlrc, and delete everything after
"showintro = no" in your hpodder.conf file?  I wonder if there may be
some subtle bug with setting different download dirs for different
podcasts.  If making those changes fixes things, that would be an
excellent clue.
