Hi, This change annoyed me as well. I understand that you are stuck between a rock and a hard place. I wonder if you would consider releasing the package with Mod4 instead of previous Mod1. e.g. Mod4+1 for desktop 1 etc.
Mod4 is the Windows key on my keyboard (what a world), and I have never used it for anything else. :D I know not everyone uses such a keyboard, but perhaps it's food for thought.
