Package: iceweasel Version: 2.0.0.1+dfsg-1 Followup-For: Bug #406145 This may be a more general DNS problem. I had problems with some applications being unable to obtain IP addresses. This included ssh and iceweasel. When using IP addresses everything works fine. Other applications work, e.g. 'ping' and 'konqueror'. The problem was posted on debian-user, be me and one other person, but the posts have not yet appeared in the mailing list archive. Look for the posts with subject containing "funny network problem.", and "Network problem" posted I think on the 10th of january.
The problem was "fixed" by installing libnss-mdns, but that package is "optional", and depends an a daemon, so I think that this does not fix the root of the problem. Thu funny thing is the for another user on my laptop, iceweasel actually works (but ssh and e.g. reportbug does not). I attached strace output from ssh and ping to the mailing list post showing that 'ssh' stops after not being able to find the libnss-mdns library, but 'ping' does not stop after not being able to find that library. Btw, when I logged in as another user, iceweasel did not work for that user. Maybe the problem is related to some user-spesific configuration issue. I have compared the 'strace' output between two applications, one that works and one that does not. It seems that ssh (which does not work) quits immediately after it searches for the file 'libnss_mdns4_minimal.so.2', but for 'ping' (which works) it goes on to open '/etc/ld.so.cache' after having searched for 'libnss_mdns4_minimal.so.2'. ******** Best regards, Torquil M.
