Avahi also has IPv6 disabled by default (I hope to change this upstream at some point but it requires careful consideration and we may make some API changes to make this 'easier'), also I would assume that 'mdns4' would instruct avahi to only return IPv4 records (which is possible) I will need to confirm this with lennart however I doubt that is not the case.
