Here the last NMUer. I have checked the package again and i do not some of the problems you are pointing. The package has not python2.3 hardcoded in any place, and it is updated to the new python policy (using python-support) to work only with python2.4. (see pyversions file). The only problem is i forgot to update the postinst and prerm scripts, and it is creating the pyo files that are being removed later. This is a bug, but i do no consider it a serious bug.
