In fact, #375533 is much more likely. I've worked around it on sarge by using nss-updatedb.
It's possible that using libc6 from etch will fix the issue. For sarge, "id" seems to use some commands which aren't in nscd and hence it tries to use libnss-ldap directly (which didn't work for me since I have /etc/libnss-ldap.conf mode 0600 and use nscd). Dear maintainer - I think this bug should be reassigned to libnss-ldap, but really there isn't a fix per se other than the one or possibly two workarounds above.
