Package: whois
Version: 4.7.5
Hello,
My Debian Sarge system has global IPv6 connectivity, but currently the
RIPE IPv6 prefix 2001:610:240::/48 is unreachable, I don't even receive
ICMPv6 Destination Unreachable messages. As 'whois.ripe.net' resolves to
both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, whois uses the IPv6 address first as usual
but it does not try the IPv4 address after the timeout :
=======================================
$ whois --verbose 193.0.0.214
Using server whois.ripe.net.
Query string: "-V Md4.7 193.0.0.214"
Timeout.
$
=======================================
On the contrary, telnet tries the IPv4 address after the timeout :
=======================================
$ telnet whois.ripe.net whois
Trying 2001:610:240:0:193::202...
Trying 193.0.0.135...
Connected to whois.ripe.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
% This is the RIPE Whois query server #1.
[...]
=======================================
Same with lynx when browsing www.ripe.net.
Is this considered a bug, and if yes, is it fixed in the version which
will be included in Etch ? I could not find anything related to this in
the changelog.
As a temporary workaround, I added an explicit 'unreachable' route for
the RIPE IPv6 prefix.
