However, the current version works on my system so that seems
unlikely. Could you please confirm that the symlink
/usr/share/texmf/tex4ht/tex4ht.env -> /etc/texmf/tex4ht.env
exists on your system? The "kpathsea" library actually looks for the
former file. On Debian systems it is linked into /etc since
configuration files should go there.
The only difference that I can see between your system and mine is in
the libraries and tetex-bin.

I am using "etch" versions which are 2.3.6.ds1-8 and 3.0-28
respectively. I will try to install your versions and see if I can
replicate the problem.
