I would at least not say that this bug is critical in Debian terms. But
it's a stupid bug nevertheless and thus I forwarded it to MySQL.

If the "LOCAL" option is no workaround for you, you can try self-compiling
the source from mysql-server-4.1 that was shipped with sarge. Or use a
binary from mysql.com. But if you figure out in which version the bug first
occured, pleaes report, that would show what they've changed to the code.
