Effectively, in libESMTP, not specifying a reverse path mailbox as the same effect of setting an empty one: http://www.stafford.uklinux.net/libesmtp/api.html#smtp_set_reverse_path I've checked and this is different from the standard sendmail behaviour, which is as you described.
