When setting the default audio sink, gstreamer-properties only sets the /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosink key. Unfortunately, there also are /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/chataudiosink and /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/musicaudiosink keys. I don't know if software use the chataudiosink, but rhythmbox does use the musicaudiosink (and I'm going to file a bug against totem-gstreamer, because it should use this too, given the description of the key). While testing pulseaudio, and its gstreamer sink, I was surprised that I would be able to play sound through the pulsesink with gst-launch, with gstreamer-properties test and with totem, and not rhythmbox. I think users would have the same expectations as I did: changing the default sink would change the sink for all applications using gstreamer... Changing the musicaudiosink key made rhythmbox use pulsesink as expected. gstreamer-properties should be improved to handle these additional keys.
