After filing this bug I noticed that xsane behaves much more friendly if user is more stupid and doesn't plug in a scanner at all. (See my comments at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=409684)
So maybe you can arrange, quite easily, for the 'device busy' message to offer the same 'help' button and so on?
