yes I have framebuffer support compiled into my kernel (radeonfb). That was not the problem. The problem was that I have configured the "crux" theme which uses JPEG images. I now changed back to the default theme and it works again. Sorry I really should have tried that before filing a bug report. Thank you for your fast answers!
