Hi Chris,

I hope you are just about upload new version of tpconfig. Otherwise, I
think tpconfig needs much of your attention or you should seek help to
get bugs fixed/NMUed. What is your thought on my report below?

This package will become one of the key useability issues of sarge if
this package stays this way.

Thanks for maintaining this package.

Osamu

----------------------------------------

I am filing a BTS report under the most annoing bug on this package. But
this package has not been updated over 6 months. I really want this bug
to be fixed and also the maiintainer upload that with all the patches
already supplied to him for l10n. (CCed to other bug reportes who have
filed key bug reports. By the way many of them are DD. So if you have
solution, please help. I do not know how to fix this beyond doing
following reports.)

Package: tpconfig
Version: 3.1.3-5
Followup-For: Bug #210993

| [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo tpconfig -i
| fatal:
|
| No Synaptics or ALPS touchpad device found

(I have Sony Vaio so I should have ALPS touch pad. It used to work with
2.4 kernel as I remember.)

This mail is to reconfirm the "important" bug problem of tpconfig with
2.6 series kernel and remind the maintainer that upstream has
information on the fix to some kernel related issues which may be worth
including. (This patch may be for other than #210993)

(October 10, 2004): X11 interfaces to some touchpads are now being
built into some kernels. If you receive an assert error (tpconfig:
utils.c:230: getbyte_expected: Assertion 'b=expected' failed) Comment
out line 230 in utils.c and recompile the source. If has been reported
that this fixes this problem and tpconfig still works correctly.

Your last update of this package is Sat, 6 Sep 2003 23:46:38 so I assume
you have not included this fix.

I can not fix this issue but considering many Sarge user want to use 2.6
kernel under laptop, lack of functioning tpconfig will be pretty bad.

Side note: I took a look at BTS of tpconfig and made comments:

Important bugs

    * #210993: tpconfig: doesn't detect trackpad under 2.6.0-test4
      Package: tpconfig; Severity: important; Reported by: Melissa Reid
      <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; 1 year and 196 days old.

      -->  This report above.

    * #237984: tpconfig does not try to use /dev/misc/psaux
      Package: tpconfig; Severity: important; Reported by: Tobias Hunger
      <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; 1 year and 14 days old.

      --> There seems simple solution.
          If fails with /dev/psaux then try aagain with /dev/misc/psaux
          (tpconfig.c) or make one option to specify device name...

Normal bugs

    * #187913: tpconfig: /etc/init.d/tpconfig during upgrade
      Package: tpconfig; Reported by: Christian Surchi
      <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Tags: sid; 1 year and 357 days old.

      --> Is this bug tag "sid" true? Besides, this seems to be the
      result of other key bugs reported.

    * #214702: tpconfig core dumps on a HP OmniBook 6000 laptop
      Package: tpconfig; Reported by: Bjorn Andersson
      <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; 1 year and 173 days old.

      --> This may be the bug fixed by the upstream fix as I reported.
      Either case, it will be nice to be fixed. Eror message matches :-)

    * #225869: tpconfig: Fails to work with 2.6
      Package: tpconfig; Reported by: John Goerzen
      <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; 1 year and 87 days old.

      --> This seems to be the same as #210993.

    * #279706: does not remove /etc/default/tpconfig on purge
      Package: tpconfig; Reported by: Joey Hess <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; 144
      days old.

      --> This seems simple to fix.

Minor / Wishlist bugs

    * #262479: tpconfig: [intl:fr] Typo in the French po-debconf translation

    * #276773: [l10n:de] updated German debconf translation
      Package: tpconfig; Severity: minor; Reported by: Jens Nachtigall
      <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Tags: l10n, patch; 164 days old.
    * #211911: tpconfig: Japanese debconf messages
      Package: tpconfig; Severity: wishlist; Reported by: Kenshi Muto
      <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Tags: l10n; 1 year and 190 days old.
    * #294748: [l10n] Initial Czech translation of tpconfig debconf messages
      Package: tpconfig; Severity: wishlist; Reported by: Miroslav Kure
      <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Tags: l10n, patch; 45 days old.

    --> I see no reason not to fix these with next upload. I wonder why
        last upload did not include earlier ones of them.

    * #229679: tasksel: Please add "tpconfig" to "laptop" task
      Package: tpconfig; Severity: wishlist; Reported by: Tomohiro
      KUBOTA <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; 1 year and 63 days old.
