xrestop showed rggobi was the biggest consumer of resources on my
system. Since I didn't even have any ggobi windows open (and hadn't
for days), this was quite a surprise:

The process is that of an R session under emacs, running ESS. I had
previously closed all the R gobi objects in R; I may have closed some
of the windows by clicking their close button first, however.
When I exited the R process the resources were free.
So perhaps there's some problem releasing the resources.
This is probably an upstream issue, and may not be fixable.
A possible complication is that my system has been up for a long time
and many packages, including X and libc, have gone through upgrades.
