I have the same problem, but the other way round; the server must provide a certificate to the client. I thus suspect that it's not a server or client issue; it's probably an issue in code shared by the server and the client, and it manifests in the one or in the other depending on the case. So I suggest to try -d 1 at the client also, and see what it says.
