Heh. After checking out networkmanager trunk, and reading some snippets of code it seems the entire point of having the dbus communication interface is to avoid using the old style of NM/wpa_supplicant communication behaviour which required starting a private wpa_supplicant process using a global ctrl_interface etc etc. So I guess my question above can be considered a brain fart.
