I don't experience this problem. I'm using hal 0.5.8.1-6.1, KDE, kpowersave and uswsusp. Looking at the file /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux, I don't see how stderr output could possibly be a problem. It's probably not a HAL bug...
