After spending several hours locating fixes to the compile bugs of the thinkpad source from Debian or from upstream, the combined patches supplied by respondents to bugs 366170 and 401382 allowed me to finally compile my module using the module-assistant on my Debian 4 GNU/Linux system running on a Thinkpad T22. The modules are loaded and appear to be functioning fine.
