alpine is not a drop-in replacement for pine yet. It does not have
maildir support, for example, so I don't think this would be a good idea.
pine is pine, and alpine is alpine.
That's why I suggested using the alternatives system. The priority of
the alternative provided by the real pine should be, of course, higher
than the priority of the one provided by alpine, at least until the
problems you mention are resolved.
