Even if X is doing something wrong, the kernel has to be able to handle it without crashing. Reassigning to linux-2.6 then. We really need to see the panic message, there is no way to debug without it. Next time you see it on screen, please take a photo with a digital camera. Note that having a small font might help since you will have much more lines on the screen :) Maybe the netconsole module could help too. I am not sure it can capture kernel panics though. But, if it does, it would be a very nice solution to capture the panic message from another machine. See Documentation/networking/netconsole.txt in the kernel source for details.
