Ok, the latter path (/usr/share) was from the sarge version of libphp-adodb and is indeed not needed in etch/sid. The former path (/usr/share/php) seems indeed not to be needed with php5, but with php4 I can reproduce my problems even on a "cleaner" system. I guess you used php5 in your tests?
