Sorry for not providing a patch, but I'd like to point out that this is much worse than it may seem. Our packages don't handle ENOSPC gracefuly. When starting Debian on a box with too few space, the desktop task won't be selected by default, but user can enable it. If she does that, at some point the install process will just appear to hang.
