Actually, it seems that the snippet I created has a bug, but works anyway because of a bug in file itself. Still investigating, but the first + in the regular expression should be a * (allow the -*- mode -*- stuff to be at beginning of line, like it is e.g. in my /usr/share/info/dir on this Ubuntu Edgy box; file 4.17-2ubuntu1).
