I'm unconvinced this should be considered a "feature" and think people
who really need it should patch their sbuild accordingly.
Note that I as well was building in / when I was proposing (and even
committing IIRC) this change, but I since managed to do without.
Well, perhaps an additional option like $build_in_base would be alright.
