I got this answer from upstream: Yeah, how about this, when you clear the level all ice is destroyed in a magnificent cascade of broken ice? It might be CPU-intense, but it could look cool and the blocks wouldn't obscure the player. It will be solved in the next version ;) -- ,''`.
