Further it doesn't copy my /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf over.

Finally, the decription says a requirement is that all modules needed for
booting must be compiled into the kernel... yet the script calls modprobe -
but it doesn't include modprobe in the initrd. So either it should include
it (and then the /lib/modules/`uname -r`) tree, or it shouldn't attempt to
use it.

As of now I'm finally able use the initrd to get RAID and LVM up and the
system booted. If I find anything else, I'll let you know.
