FYI, I just compiled alsa-lib from the alsa hg repo (checkout today April 10:th) and tried with that and it seems to work so far after a few minutes of testing (1.0.13-2 usually died after a minute at most).
ALsa 1.0.14rc3 is waiting for upload to experimental. Your prob will be latest fix in 1.0.14 soon in unstable. Elimar --Numeric stability is probably not all that important when you're guessing;-)
