I've just encountered a similar problem (419031). I've created a new bug report sing 416841 was marked as "unreproducible" so I wondered if my bug is the same or not, something about which I'm not sure either.
However the symptoms look very similar, it just looks as though mysql5.0 doesn't install on Linux 2.4 hanging on closing an old copy. -Nigel
